Pizza's can be made many different ways, with many different toppings. In this blog entry I'll cover all bases of making your own pizza which can be Vegan or Vegetarian.
Pizza dough is the most basic and fundamental aspect of a pizza, and is extremely easy to make. First fill your mixing bowl with warm water, add yeast to the water and let sit for 5 minutes (the warmth of the water activates the yeast). Then add roughly half of the flour you are planning on using to the water. Stir and mix thoroughly, then add olive oil (a few tablespoons roughly), Salt & Sugar. This is also the time to add any special herbs you may want to include such as Basil, Oregano, or Rosemary. I recommend using fresh herbs if your are planning on combing into the dough. Dried herbs retain very little flavor especially within pizza dough. Continue to add flour until it reaches a dough consistency, then kneed the dough to ensure a balanced and fluffy pizza dough. Place the dough inside a mixing bowl, cover with a clean tablecloth and let sit for roughly 30 minutes to 1 hour. When you return, the dough will have formed a large air pocket within the center. Punch down the air and kneed one more time, the dough is now ready to be rolled out onto a baking pan or parchment paper. You can store dough for over 1 week by putting any leftover within a container and storing it in the refrigerator.
Dough Ingredients:
- 2 cups Flour
- Warm Water
- Olive Oil (add tablespoon at a time to desired level)
- 1 tablespoon salt
- Sugar - up to a 1/4 cup for desired sweetness
- Yeast
- Add herbs for seasoning
Next is the sauce, I will feature how to make your own sauce in another entry. For now, buying marinara sauce at the store is fine. I prefer to combine pesto with marinara at about 1 to 1 ratio. Spread the sauce evenly across the pizza, be careful not to overdo otherwise the dough will not thoroughly bake. Then comes the cheese, simply spread across the pizza, again be careful not to put to much. If you are Vegan an easy and relatively tasty substitute known as "cheese alternative" is available at most grocery stores which can be shredded over a pizza. Finally add your favorite toppings. Place on baking sheet or parchment paper in the oven for roughly 12 minutes on 400 F°. Cut and enjoy!
My favorite Pizza toppings:
- Bell Pepper
- Broccoli
- Caramelized Onion
- Crushed Red Pepper
- Cucumber or Zucchini
- Mushrooms
